"A Day in the Life of Maurice Haylett" - 5:40 CARAVAN, –uno de los grupos más importantes en el ámbito progresivo–, se formó a principios de 1968 en Canterbury, por cuatro integrantes que habían tocado en varias ocasiones con la banda WILDE FLOWERS, donde también tocaba Kevin AYERS y Robert WYATT + Hugh HOPPER, futuros integrantes de SOFT MACHINE. Su primera alineación estuvo a cargo de Pye HASTINGS (guitarra, voz); Dave SINCLAIR (teclados); Richard SINCLAIR (bajo eléctrico, voz) y Richard COUGHAN (batería). Estos cuatro músicos, otorgaron un sonido característico al rock progresivo, –desde su segundo álbum–, que después sería catalogado y reconocido por sus particularidades como Progresivo Canterbury. CARAVAN se convertiría pronto en uno de los grupos más representativos de la escena progresiva en todo el mundo. Sin embargo, ante tanta idea propia y tanta falta de compatibilidad con las ajenas, el grupo experimentaría varios cambios en su alineación y por consiguiente, diferentes propuestas musicales, siempre bajo el liderazgo de Dave SINCLAIR. Richard es el primero en hacer maletas. Entre sus búsquedas estuvieron los grupos HATFIELD & THE NORTH y NATIONAL HEALTH. Steve MILLER fue quien lo remplazó y a partir de ese momento, los cambios de alineación en el grupo se harían más bien tradicionales. Sin embargo, la idea musical con la que se presentaron ante un público ávido por sonidos progresivos más representativos, pegó con tubo. De hecho, cuando se habla de progresivo Canterbury, uno de los representantes más importantes que casi siempre sale a relucir son CARAVAN. Con instrumentos más bien tradicionales (guitarra, bajo, percusiones y teclados) y la aparición eventual de una viola y de un piano, este grupo se convierte en uno de los representantes mejor estructurados de la zona inglesa que le dio su nombre a este subgénero. Normalmente caracterizados por un progresivo limpio, melódico, cadente, meloso a veces pero también a veces con despliegues de poder, CARAVAN le ha heredado su sonido a muchos seguidores.
