After several years in the industry, he decided to set up his own project in 2015, which resulted in the first album "Life Is A Killer" in 2018. Showered with praise, comparisons with Steven Wilson or Pink Floyd were always present. These are not necessarily the worst references, but they also set the bar high for a new album. But Hahn can absolutely live up to the claim, his claim, and has once again released an album that "poaches" in exactly these realms. But "Icy Skies" is not to be understood as a copy or something like that, but much more as a bow to the genius of the musicians. This time, too, he has brought in support, but has also contributed bass, violin, guitar, keyboards and percussion in addition to the vocals. The most important guest is probably Todd Sucherman, who otherwise does his work for Styx and was already part of Finally George's debut. Sucherman himself talks down his contribution: "George's material is harmonically and rhythmically very rich, a dream for every drummer," he says, "Every song is like its own little film. To paraphrase my drummer colleague Dave Mattacks, with music this good, your job is really just not to break it." George, of course, denies this and puts it into perspective: "Todd doesn't just play the tracks in, like you might do as a session musician. He gives an incredible amount of input, suggests things and puts thought into them. Icy Skies wouldn't be what it is without him." With a great sense of harmony and melody, the songs are a little quieter and more deliberate this time around, but no less exciting because of it. Even if the first listening impression may convey otherwise at first, one should not lose sight of the album and treat it to several run-throughs. With every new spin, new impressions open up, the songs develop into real little masterpieces.
01. Ha. In reality, it doesn't leave you alone. It prods and pokes and forces you to engage-to marvel at her odd flourishes, deceptively complicated guitar parts and sly arrangements. She has said that Pompeii, her sixth album, was "written and recorded in a quagmire of unease." With pandemic restrictions and fog leaving her to her own devices, the singer-songwriter had plenty of time to "grapple with existence, resignation and faith." Her conclusion is pragmatic if not comforting: "The world is on fire but the bins must go out on a Tuesday night ... I put a groove behind [the unease] to hold on to. The grief is in the saxophones." In fact, Euan Hinshelwood's sax is her co-star, a supporting actor but a major presence. It can suggest agitation "Dirt on the Bed," and come on like honey on "Moderation," which sounds full and warm with its groovy, playful bass. But don't get too comfortable. This is art rock and it's provocative. The lyrics reference a 1958 essay, "The Moon"-about being less impressed by technology than art-by Brazilian modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi, who magically found ways to make hard lines and "cold" materials exceedingly human-friendly. "I can't have it/ I don't want it/ I want to touch it," Le Bon sings, skating beautifully along the contradiction of all-consuming appetite and decorum. It's a push-pull that seems embedded in her: Le Bon hails from Wales but lives in Joshua Tree, two distinctly weird, remote and mythic locales where outsiderism is worn like a badge of honor. "Pompeii" unfurls with distorted carnival music, like a carousel out of tune, foreboding in the background even as the vocal melody is reassuring: Le Bon's voice effortlessly slides up and down scales, a quick shape-shifter in the vein of Bowie. In fact, "French Boys" feels like it could have been a cut from his moody, slinky Let's Dance era. "Harbour," meanwhile, has a different '80s vibe, its synth pop and grounded ethereality recalling Kate Bush or Tracey Thorn. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
01. It's an uneasy combination in which Jordan's forceful drumming dominates the tracks, with Young's vocals nearly buried. But that only means that the production has ruined a group of songs few of which were any good anyway. The only one that offers the promise of being one of Young's better efforts is "Hippie Dream," a sober criticism of what became of '60s idealism in general and Young's erstwhile bandmate David Crosby in particular. But if Landing on Water was not a good album, at least it seemed to point Young away from the stylistic dabbling of his last three albums and back toward the kind of rock he did best, and at least some of his fans returned as a result, giving him a slight uptick in sales. © William Ruhlmann /TiVo
01. The gnarled sounds of the Hammond organ come courtesy of Detlef Bosche, whereas George secured the services of pianist Matthias Pogoda for the title track Life Is A Killer. The result is a prog-rock album with numerous melodious pop elements, mastered by no less a figure than Grammy Award winner Tim Young - the icing on the cake of such a visionary project. Finally George is the epitome of flawlessly arranged and recorded prog-rock pop music - endlessly deep tracks that ache with the pain of separation. With addictive walls of sound that repeatedly build up to monumental proportions. Sophisticated melodies, held together by forceful arrangements, are melded with harmonious vocals, heavy-metal guitar riffs, opulent keyboards, cinematic strings and epic choruses. For the percussion parts, he found someone whose name carries serious weight in the music business: Todd Sucherman, the drummer of legendary US rock band Styx, who works as an online session drummer in his spare time. Doubling down on their expansive electronic influence and pop sensibilities while remaining faithful to their nu-metal past has paid off, creating a far-reaching and fertile landscape in which 'Requiem' occupies and blossoms within. The record pulses with sonic drop-outs, sharp screeches, lumbering riffs and a buzzcut delivery. Korn are anew, and 'Requiem' sees them fearless, no longer managing a balancing act with imprudent collaborators and instead embracing what made them famous to begin with. Impressively, their 14th studio album is teeming with riveting hooks: "I should've been good, I should've been down, I couldn't let go, what could I do?" in lead single 'Start The Healing', comes reinforced with coarse vocal layering and a thunderous sense of purpose. Unbound by time restraints and the typical intensity of recording, the band let the tracks develop naturally over a number of months, creating space for each to breathe and take on their own identity. 'Let The Dark Do The Rest' conjures up the pace and theatrics of a vivid slasher soundtrack, where Jonathan Davis' gravelly words fade inside each other among a bounding trawler of down-tuned groove filling the negative space. The outfit channel scratchy metalcore tropes on 'Lost In The Grandeur'; stark evidence that Korn have their finger firmly on the pulse. Following the lead of Limp Bizkit's late 2021 release 'STILL SUCKS' and coupling with the hype from a wave of newer, female-forward artists (Wargasm, Nova Twins, even Rina Sawayama), 'Requiem' appears in the midst of a transportive wave of nu-metal revivalism. 'Requiem' has the potential to introduce Korn's comprehensive mythology to new ears as they continue to pioneer experimentation in a sometimes stagnant scene. R"Five years after releasing their sophomore album 'Invoke the Bizarre', Bangalore's Bevar Sea used the Covid-19 imposed lockdown as an opportunity to regroup and start working on the third album titled 'The Timeless Zone'. With the backdrop of the lyrics portraying a tryst with the consciousness of man, storying into travels and visions within the self, the music on over the course of the album, pays homage to the glory years of the 70s and 80s hard rock and metal with the typical rifftastic stoner/doom sound the band has embraced on the two albums prior to this." Bevar Sea add, "The Timeless Zone, the song and the album, continues our approach of playing stoner doom music while being even more loyal to our hard rock and metal roots than before. Every band member had to step up and learn how to record themselves and work via email for arrangements, demos, and finally turn up one by one to record. This album is us embracing the 2021 way of making music while also being busy working from home, taking care of our families, and just dying to be able to play this new music to our fans live some day." He contributed a couple of songs to its 1995 sequel, Welcome to the Neighborhood, but by the time Meat Loaf was ready to do a third installment of Bat Out of Hell, Steinman opted out for unspecified reasons, leaving the singer to use five previously released Steinman songs as produced by Desmond Child -- a satisfactory compromise that at the very least illustrated how Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" should've been on a Bat Out of Hell album. Through a series of circumstances, Meat Loaf and Steinman wound up reuniting for 2016's Braver Than We Are, which was produced by Paul Crook, just like its 2012 predecessor Hell in a Handbasket. While the record bears some slick modern hallmarks, it is very much a throwback, evoking memories of Todd Rundgren's overblown Springsteen parody of 1977 as well as the earnest re-creation of 1993. Steinman's songs are suitably theatrical -- the opening "Who Needs the Young" feels like it's a Broadway reject -- and while he slyly winks at his past with "Going All the Way Is Just the Start (A Song in 6 Movements)," a song that features a cameo from "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" singer Ellen Foley, he also seems unaware that Ratt also got to the title "Loving You Is a Dirty Job" in 1990 (albiet after Steinman whose composition first appeared as a Bonnie Tyler single in 1985). That isolation is ultimately a benefit because Braver Than We Are feels caught between nostalgia and indifference, an album so old-fashioned it seems happily ignorant of modernity even when it threads EDM rhythms and metallic guitars into "More." The other way it's possible to tell this album was released in 2016 is Meat Loaf's performance. Thin and sometimes breathless, he's no longer the colossus of the '70s, but the diminishment of his range humanizes him and adds a bittersweet tinge to this reunion. Through Meat Loaf's voice alone, mortality becomes evident and it makes this third reunion with Steinman all the sweeter. Braver Than We Are may have its flaws -- it's too staid and self-conscious, for one -- but Steinman never found a better interpreter for his songs than Meat Loaf, and Meat Loaf never sounds more like himself than he does when singing Steinman, and that's why the album works. © Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo
01. While undoubtedly power metal in Christer Wahlgren's vibrato-laden trills, expect little Rhapsody of Fire sword-flashing here. Injected with a healthy dose of AC/DC-esque hard rock and aptly energetic Gothenburg riffing with an Avatar clown theme to boot, tracks range from glam-themed arena-rock anthems to take-no-prisoners beatdowns of riffy goodness. Ultimately a mixed bag with little originality to be found, third release We Set the World on Fire rides Occam's razor like a Harley with some of the best riffs of the year's start, with some of the blandest songwriting to kick it off. Their particular genius is in continually finding new ways to explore these traditions. Their 2013 set World Boogie is Coming, titled after one of their father's more famous expressions (and he had more than a few!), was built around field recordings of north Mississippi legends Othar Turner and R.L. Burnside; in 2019 they released Up and Rolling, inspired by photos of area musicians from a lost roll of film taken by Wyatt McSpadden. For Set Sail the brothers, along with bassist Jesse Williams, have befriended another second-generation musician, singer Lamar Williams Jr.-son of the Allman Brothers bassist (no relation to Jesse). According to Luther Dickinson, being sons of famous musicians was their bonding connection: "I believe music is a form of communion with our loved ones and conjuring this vibe with members of musical families can be inspirational. We never had to figure out what it means and takes to be a musician." The primeval voodoo rhythms that are in the brother's DNA drive "Rabbit Foot" where Williams sings, "Don't spell my name on a stone/ Give me an unmarked grave and a box of bones/ When my spirits free to roam." "See the Moon," an upbeat, '70s-inspired funk groove is a welcome new flavor with Sharisse Norman joining Williams on vocals. The history-conscious brothers bring in 82-year-old Stax veteran William Bell to convincingly sing "Never Want to Be Kissed," his ode to a final kiss with a dying lost love. In general though, this is not one of the brothers' more distinguished collections of originals. While the playing is tight, Williams is an uninspiring amateur, more of a talker than a singer with little range, and often lacking any emotion. "Juicy Juice" whose title screams funk, is set to an elastic '70s rhythm but is oddly low key and also handicapped by silly lyrics about a "classy city stoner chick" whose "juice is the truth." Williams flatlines in the slow "Bumpin'," sounding as if he's reading from a page. Few of the tunes are memorable, particularly closer "Authentic," a righteous plea for sanity and respect; with lyrics about "guns in the streets" it's is an overly simplistic message song with Williams' sing-talking over a weak musical foundation: "On the American tree of music roots/ Each branch bears a different fruit/ Music runs in the blood of our family in/ Music and love is what I believe." This rare misstep from Cody and Luther is missing their usual confidence and ferocity, perhaps the evidence that urban-leaning funk is one subgenre the talented duo just does not feel. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
01.
