He already knew how well his voice blended with former Spock's Beard band-mate and Big Big Train drummer/ vocalist, Nick D'Virgilio who came on board and, considering a third man, the Americans sought out Haken's Ross Jennings from the UK to complete the trio. All three found they had songs that would benefit from the three part harmonic blend, and so they pooled their resources, inputting creatively into each others compositions. Neal comments: "What a great pleasure it's been to work on this album with these amazing artists! It was kind of funny. We had been working on the songs remotely for several months before I finally heard all of us singing together at the same time. The first time I brought the faders up, I knew we had the magic!" Nick adds: "I've known and worked with Neal for over 30 years and I've been a big fan of Ross and the music he makes for a long time. I felt confident right away that this would be a fun project to be a part of. I was so right." Ross comments: "Receiving 'The Call' from Neal to participate in this project was somewhat of a prayer answered. As a long time fan of their work, I've been singing along to Neal's & Nick's records for years, so it felt really natural for my voice to slot right in." The tracks took shape with the musicians recording all of the music and vocals separately, yet the eclectic performances burst with the energy and excitement of the collaboration. The only other contributor is the excellent Ric Sanders, fiddle player for Fairport Convention who appears at regular intervals, adding jaunty colour and depth. The psychedelic leanings of the debut are continued and extended here, and as usual, Rosalie's compositions twist and turn in unexpected directions several times in each song. She has an ear for detail, and was probably tempted to keep layering as ideas arose, but to her credit, she has allowed the music room to breathe, despite some complex arrangements. So Two Piece Puzzle is definitely a step forward from the debut, and is easily her best work to date, and given the quality of previous songs, that is saying something. The obvious point of reference is The Beatles, and their influence abounds, and many other influences pop up along the way. There's a nod to Bowie in some of the quirky arrangements, a tip of the hat to Kate Bush, and moments which really remind me of the late great Randy California. To take these flavours and create a new and exciting recipe of her own is a tribute to her undoubted talent, and she is fast developing a very distinctive sound. Remarkably, it's fueled in part by the 2017 death of Roland Orzabal's wife and partner of many years and his denial about losing her. "I think that when you've been close to someone for decades, they are living within you as well as without," he has said. "And consciously I did not believe she would die, though subconsciously I was, without doubt, preparing for the inevitable, arming myself against the future shock." The title track is shimmering and mysterious, with strident drums and alien beeps but also vocals like a soothing balm. "Winter done, they'll soon be gone/ From this unforgiving place/ To that vague and distant void/ Where the sunlight splits the eye," Orzabal sings of that threshold from life to death. It is heartbreaking, but also hopeful. "Please Be Happy" is incredibly candid-and one of their prettiest tracks: "These days it's like a wave is breaking over you/ Dragging you in with the undertow/ If you lay among the graves you will see other ghosts." And "No Small Thing," about facing the heartbreak of losing your love, is a stunner. Stripped-back acoustic guitar builds to the dreamy psychedelia Tears for Fears has always done so well, the whole thing swelling to a bursting-the-seams crescendo by the end. "Long, Long, Long Time" shows how the duo have always been masters of dynamics, its hymn-like organ giving way to a monster chorus; the song also reminds you just how much Sam Smith owes Curt Smith for their angelic style. "Master Plan" giddily dips into the band's longtime love of Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, and "Break the Man" is catchy jangle pop touched with moody strings. "My Demons," meanwhile, is a nasty piece of work, in the best way (one akin to Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"), with Orzabal drilling the doomed lyrics: "Why is my name in lights when my name is spelled wrong . People always find you when your cell phone is on." Smith comes in to sweeten up the chorus, but he sounds thrillingly stretched to his limits as the rhythm gallops like a sweating horse. Before he sadly passed away in 2015, founding Gong member, Daevid Allen, laid out his hopes for a future Gong, that it should be uplifting, exploratory and a positive force. Kavus Torabi, Fabio Golfetti, Ian East, Dave Sturt and Cheb Nettles, chosen by him, continue his vision. 'Pulsing Signals', recorded live at The Wardrobe in Leeds, The Cluny in Newcastle and Rescue Rooms in Nottingham in 2019 during The Universe Also Collapses tour finds the group in spirited form, unbeknownst to them, it being their final tour before the global pandemic took charge. Owing to Gong being an international band, lockdown and restrictions on travel made it impossible to convene and work on new music. The band received many requests by fans to release a live album and fortunately enough, the band had multitrack recordings of several shows from the 2019 tour. Bassist Dave Sturt went through all the master tapes and selected the best performances which became 'Pulsing Signals'. The album was recorded by Pete Wibrew and mixed by Frank Byng, while mastering was handled by Andy Jackson.
