DOOMED & STONED IN NEW YORK

"Winters in Buffalo are long and cold, no doubt. It took just a simple bout of cabin fever, boredom and aggression, but here we are as a band" -- Blackhand.

When most people hear "New York," they automatically think of New York City. Well, there's a whole giant state named New York! Of course, NYC is the most populated city in the state, so stands to reason that the lion's share of bands on this compilation are from there. However, if we add up all of the other cities and small towns in New York, we have a total number of bands that exceeds the city that never sleeps (which is a lie, they sleep).

I have the unique experience of having lived most of my life in Buffalo, NY and spent 3 years in NYC (Bronx and Brooklyn). There are great bands from all over the Empire State! We have a great variety of bands included here: doom, stoner rock, sludge, clean vocals, growled vocals, instrumentals, solo projects, etc.

Huge thanks to Alaysa Dale for helping to contact bands and for contributing the artwork. Also to Claudia Crespo for suggesting some bands that we were missing and for putting on her bimonthly "Ode to Doom" show in NYC. And finally to Billy Goat for giving me the opportunity to put this whole thing together despite many delays.

When I was asked by Glenn Szymanski and Bill Goat to help curate a Doomed & Stoned comp for New York State, I was elated. Not only was this an opportunity to get to showcase some of the best heavy music in the state but also a chance to shed light on the bands that often get overlooked because they don't live in the NYC area. There is some incredible talent in New York as you will soon discover. The heavy music community in this state - be it doom, sludge or stoner - have a lot to offer the world.

New York is a beautiful state filled with lush landscapes and serene parks most of the year but it can also be a barren, abysmal place in the harshness of winter. Living in an environment like this can be both inspiring and soul crushing. These surroundings can influence a lot of great art and music. In Buffalo for example, it's so cold and dreary sometimes the only thing to do is go into your basement or practice space and jam to stay sane resulting in some of the best music this state has to offer.

We hope you enjoy this collection of some of New York's finest. Thank you to Glenn and Billy for bringing me along for the ride and allowing me not only to help curate the comp but to do the artwork as well.
