His grandfather was a musician, and his father José Manuel Hidalgo "Manengue" a renowned conga player. He grew up in a house surrounded by drums, bongos, congas and timbales. At age 3, he began his interest in music and particularly by the drum. He practiced and developed his speed and technique on congas and other instruments at home. Hidalgo tore a tone with sticks and then played it with his hands. In 1980 he joined Batacumbele and in 1981 the band traveled to Cuba, where he met José Luis Quintana "Changuito". Together they were able to create a unique style and began a new musical era in Latin music. Hidalgo in 1982 starred with Eddie Palmieri and the legendary musician Dizzy Gillespie was very impressed with him and told him that sometime in the future should play together. This became reality in 1988 when Hidalgo joined the Dizzy Gillespie United Nations Jazz Orchestra. In 1990, she released her first album to the market, titled "Villa Hidalgo" and in the same year, he was named assistant professor at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. There he taught all kinds of rhythms, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, reggae, African and jazz. He kept his teaching position from 1992-1996, when he decided to continue the music in different live performances. He is regarded as the greatest living conga.Download
