When the rumblings of deconstruction unsettled the ground beneath it, the discipline devoted to understanding artistic creativity shook, then realigned itself. As a result, the tired litany of style, influence, academic pedigree, and connoisseurship that used to drive art historical scholarship no longer satisfies. These discussions do not tell us what we really want to know: Why? Today we are inclined to go beyond the old formalism and "read" pictures contextually, looking for their interactions with the powers of culture, politics, philosophy, psychology, technology, and the economy.
