There was a very interesting BBC documentary on Big Bill Broonzy four. I mentioned her song 'Black, Brown and White' a couple of times in class, especially considering his critique of racial discrimination in the United States in the years immediately following the war. I am very happy to see that Broonzy is receiving attention in the popular media, not only for its musicality and creativity, but because he played such an important role in bringing African-American music to Britain and Europe in the 1950s. it is also a fascinating character because it goes against the prevailing stereotype of blues musicians were rural southern rebels who sold his soul to the devil.

Given the title of the documentary, it would have been nice to hear more about Broonzy friendships with prominent figures of English blues Alexis Korner and Paul Oliver. His British audiences loved him so much they tried to raise money for him when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1958 (this is not mentioned in the documentary). However, it is an interesting story of how an ordinary African American born into a family of sharecroppers South in the early 20th century became very popular with people like Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton.
