In 1994 Gov't Mule a rock trio sought to recover the essence of the southern bands, blues rock and hard rock of the 60s and 70s, which is why the project was driven by guitarist and vocalist Warren Haynes emerged and bassist Allen Woody, both members of the Allman brothers band in the 80s, and the drummer Matt Abts, who played with Dickey Betts, the original member of the pioneering group of southern rock of the Allman brothers.

With the sudden death of Woody Allen in 2000, the band began to have many bassists guests during their tours, culminating with the release of their second studio album, recorded with multiple bassists and called Deep End. Finally keyboardist Danny Louis and bassist Andy Hess (later replaced by Jorgen Carlsson) joined.
