In different periods has established itself as one of the most original voices of the tenor saxophone: the debut as a leader on Blue Note in 1963, in a session led by Andrew Hill (Black Fire and Point of Departure), Kenny Dorham (Trompeta Toccata, A Mas), McCoy Tyner (the Real McCoy), Bobby Hutcherson (The Kicker), Horace Silver (Song for my Father), Lee Morgan (The Sidewinder), Grant Green (Idle Moments, Solid), the staff Mode for Joe, always with Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock (the Prisoner), to fusion recordings - questionable, according to some, considerable, according to others - of the seventies, and especially the comeback in the eighties (The State of Tenor, Vol. 1 & 2) and ninety (fundamentals So Near So Far, Lush Life, Big Band and the Standard Joe).
