La película narra la historia de un veterano de guerra, ex militar capitán John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), quien inexplicablemente es transportado hasta Marte donde, pese a su reticencia, se verá inmerso en un conflicto de proporciones épicas con los habitantes del planeta, entre los que se encuentran Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) y la cautivante Princesa Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins).
