Sinopsis:

Mikado Ryūgamine es un joven que anhela la apasionante vida de la gran ciudad. Por invitación de su amigo de la infancia Masaomi Kida, decide trasladarse a un instituto en Ikebukuro, Tokio.

 

Masaomi le advierte acerca de la gente que no debe cruzar en la ciudad: un hombre violento vestido como un camarero, un comerciante de información, y una banda misteriosa llamada "Dollars". Para colmo, Mikado es testigo de una leyenda urbana en su primer día en la ciudad: El motociclista negro, quien supuestamente es el conductor sin cabeza de una motocicleta color negro.

 

Las denominadas bandas de color abundan en este lugar: Pañuelos amarillos, cuadros azules, y un grupo que en el último tiempo tomó mucha popularidad y causó temor en la gente, el grupo incoloro, los "Dollars". Muchos rumores corren sobre este grupo, que aparentemente recluta gente a través de una web. Al ser incoloros, muchas personas se hacen llamar miembros de la banda sin serlo realmente, causando así desconcierto en la población del lugar.

 

La narrativa sigue todos los personajes por igual, mostrando cómo sus vidas se cruzan, creando una trama mayor de lo que cada personaje sabe acerca de un incidente común.
