Text and Textuality in Early Medieval Iberia: The Written and The World, 711-1031 (Oxford Historical Monographs) by Graham Barrett English | October 20, 2023 | ISBN: 0192895370 | 560 pages | MOBI | 7.81 Mb Text and Textuality in Early Medieval Iberia is a study of the functions and conceptions of writing and reading, documentation and archives, and the role of literate authorities in the Christian kingdoms of the northern Iberian Peninsula between the Muslim conquest of 711 and the fall of the Islamic caliphate at Córdoba in 1031. Based on the first complete survey of the over 4,000 surviving Latin charters from the period, it is an essay in the archaeology and biography of text: part one concerns materiality, tracing the lifecycle of charters from initiation and composition to preservation and reuse, while part two addresses connectivity, delineating a network of texts through painstaking identification of more than 2,000 citations of other charters, secular and canon law, the Bible, liturgy, and monastic rules. Few may have been able to read or write, yet the extent of textuality was broad and deep, in the authority conferred upon text and the arrangements made to use it. Via charter and scribe, society and social arrangements came increasingly to be influenced by norms originating from a network of texts. By profiling the intersection and interaction of text with society and culture, Graham Barrett reconstructs textuality, how the authority of the written and the structures to access it framed and constrained actions and cultural norms, and proposes a new model of early medieval reading. As they cited other texts, charters circulated fragments of those texts; we must rethink the relationship of sources and audiences to reflect fragmentary transmission, in a textuality of imperfect knowledge. Ten Minutes to Liberation By Venerable Yongtah 2017 | 112 Pages | ISBN: 1624120830 | EPUB | 1 MB If given ten minutes, how would you manage your mind? Momentary liberation may be a matter of purifying ourselves of greed or anger by rolling around a single thought when greed and anger arise to harm the purity of our minds. Daily liberation is a matter of setting aside time during the day for Zen meditation-be it ten minutes, thirty minutes, or sixty or more minutes-so that the sense of self disappears. Liberation should also be discussed in terms of its different dimensions, but the most primary form of liberation is the light "no-self" feeling that one senses when the feeling of the self disappears. Tech Giants and Digital Domination By Caleb Bissinger 2017 | 178 Pages | ISBN: 1534501258 | EPUB | 1 MB Are tech giants the new robber barons of the digital age? Many governments and ordinary people are increasingly uncomfortable with the monopolistic might a small number of tech companies are amassing, the taxes they are avoiding, the data they are collecting, the privacy they are undermining, and the way they are functioning as "extraterritorial" powers beholden to no state and to no citizen or consumer. All sides of this super-charged debate are represented here, from those of the chieftains of Silicon Valley and EU regulators to FBI counterintelligence agents, scrappy open-source programmers, and ordinary computer users and digital consumers. Readers will understand the digital world we currently inhabit, the limits of its freedoms, and who owns and controls its future. Team Leadership: How to Define, Apply, and Measure It by Geoff Ribbens, Mark Abraham, Alistair Cumming English | December 30, 2024 | ISBN: 1032757744 | 114 pages | MOBI | 1.27 Mb A small group of experienced business leaders and academics have teamed up to create an innovative and potentially disruptive approach to developing leadership in the 21st century. The result is a unique, people-centric, and scientifically researched theory of leadership linked to an accurate data-based assessment and diagnostic product. This is the result of several years of study and development as well as many years of curiosity and experience. This is a new approach to leadership development. The authors use a combination of leadership experience, research, and science to move away from unprovable theory and subjective judgment to deliver a definable product with unlimited application. For individual leaders looking to maximise personal development and results or for organisations wanting to analyse leadership and its effects across an entire structure or business, this book will redefine understanding and development. The work has proved that team members' perceptions of a leader and leadership behaviours will define their motivation, willingness, loyalty, output, and mental health far more than the actual leadership behaviours themselves. The authors' application of Emergent Team Leadership Theory, why and to what degree team members attribute leadership to their leaders, directors, or managers, leads to accurate assessments of how leaders and leadership are viewed in teams, businesses, and organisations. Importantly, the work is so accurate that individual leaders can define precisely where to focus their personal development to get the most from themselves and their teams. Even for leaders and managers of the same grade in the same role, personal leadership development and training will be different. This work has developed the Leadership Pathway Audit™ that measures the effectiveness of leadership for any leader or any team and will, over time, chart how leadership changes as any factor of the leader, the team, or the situation changes. Each leader, director, or manager gets a unique representation of the perception of their leadership at any time and a detailed report on the data and perceptions behind this representation. There are limitless options for following this with bespoke analysis of an individual's leadership and for personal development programs tailored to their profile and organisation. Equally, reviewing the entirety of a business or organisation's leadership profiles gives an incredibly accurate view of leadership across an entire company organisation, or sector. Team Intelligence (Security, Audit and Leadership Series) by Mohammad Nozari English | December 17, 2024 | ISBN: 1032863625 | 148 pages | MOBI | 4.45 Mb If you have wondered about mesmerizing patterns of flying birds and fish, and asked how they do it, then you have observed what biologists refer to as an intelligent swarm. It is as if the members of swarm are receiving commands on what to do. It is magic! In reality, it is an intriguing set of behaviors that many species including birds, fish, bats, wolves, honeybees, termites and many others have learnt during their millions of years of evolution, which has enabled them to succeed better and sustain their lives. We have learned and applied our learning from nature, and have been inspired to invent many things we use from this fabulous source: Mother Nature! The question that led to long research and this book is set to answer, might be strange and unique: Can we use nature for managing people and teams in companies? After all, social beings in nature seem to be able function very well, and recent research has revealed great approaches they take to make decisions, and work together. This book opens that exact interdisciplinary field, a bridge between managing teams and people in companies with how similar problems are solved in intelligent swarms. The research supporting this idea has led to a set of principles that will transform traditional teams into Intelligent Teams. These teams are capable of bringing performance, learning, and happiness of the team members to a new high level. Teaching, Making a Difference : The Art of Helping Others Help Themselves By Steve Sonntag 2016 | 147 Pages | ISBN: 1475831773 | EPUB | 1 MB Teachers may retire from their schools, but they never retire from teaching. Teaching, Making a Difference includes two goals. The first is to give guidance to teachers contemplating retirement while helping them to maintain realistic standards for their students. The second goal is to present a multitude of options for just-retired teachers to enjoy their well-earned retirement while still using their knowledge and experience to benefit their communities. Teachers will learn techniques that they can incorporate into their lesson plans as they continue to teach, and upon retiring, they will learn how to develop their own "lesson plan" to take care of themselves and to participate in their communities. Teaching the Next Generation of Teachers : Preparing for the Practice of Learning Communities in Secondary School By Rich Waters 2016 | 176 Pages | ISBN: 1475829175 | EPUB | 1 MB Teaching the Next Generation of Teachers looks to serve the many teachers who teach or sponsor classes, clubs, or conferences for secondary school students who aspire to become teachers. Based on the author's research with students in the Tomorrow's Teachers program, the book's development is rich with the voices of students and their reflections on how teachers sometimes inspired them to teach and sometimes impelled them to think of new ways to teach. Their personal stories as learners will validate all students' experiences as it both invites and inspires aspiring teachers in secondary schools to fulfill their dreams by becoming teachers. Guided by the learning community concept, it presents research and practical activities that will assist teachers and their students in re-imagining and re-inventing what teachers and schools do. It does this as it presents important research on how professional learning communities have the most positive effects on student learning while also empowering teachers to greater job satisfaction. Most importantly, this book will serves as a practical, how-to guide so secondary school students can begin to experience working in a professional learning community as they strive to improve the schools they are in right now. In doing this, the book adheres to the idea that 'student leadership now is the best preparation for teacher leadership later.' It will help aspiring teachers move away from the many stale traditions in schooling as they re-conceive of the profession in ways that will make it more personally satisfying while acknowledging that the work of teachers in the 21st century must necessarily be different from what we have now, legacy practices of standardization left over from the industrial age. Teaching Religion and Healing By Linda L. Barnes; Inés M. Talamantez 2006 | 405 Pages | ISBN: 019517643X | EPUB | 1 MB The study of medicine and healing traditions is well developed in the discipline of anthropology. Most religious studies scholars, however, continue to assume that "medicine" and "biomedicine" are one and the same and that when religion and medicine are mentioned together, the reference is necessarily either to faith healing or bioethics. Scholars of religion also have tended to assume that religious healing refers to the practices of only a few groups, such as Christian Scientists and pentecostals. Most are now aware of the work of physicians who attempt to demonstrate positive health outcomes in relation to religious practice, but few seem to realize the myriad ways in which healing pervades virtually all religious systems. This volume is designed to help instructors incorporate discussion of healing into their courses and to encourage the development of courses focused on religion and healing. It brings together essays by leading experts in a range of disciplines and addresses the role of healing in many different religious traditions and cultural communities. An invaluable resource for faculty in anthropology, religious studies, American studies, sociology, and ethnic studies, it also addresses the needs of educators training physicians, health care professionals, and chaplains, particularly in relation to what is referred to as "cultural competence" - the ability to work with multicultural and religiously diverse patient populations. Teaching in a Globally-Connected World : Preparing Learners for the Future By Ervin F. Sparapani; Pamela L. Ross McClain 2016 | 245 Pages | ISBN: 0761868143 | EPUB | 1 MB This book examines the current social, political, economic, and religious climate of the world, makes projections for the future, and then makes suggestions for what the contributors believe educators need to think about in order to adequately prepare young people to successfully navigate that future. We live in a globally-connected world, and young people, as they move into the future, need to be prepared to live in that future. Schools (and teachers) tend to focus on the present, which is okay; however, schools (and teachers) must decide what is important to know in the present in order for young people to be successful in the future. The responsibility of education today must be to prepare learners to live in an unknown future, that is global, and not be so focused on an uncertain present. Teaching Hemingway and Modernism By Joseph Fruscione 2015 | 239 Pages | ISBN: 1606352466 | EPUB | 1 MB Teaching Hemingway in his time Teaching Hemingway and Modernism presents concrete, intertextual models for using Hemingway's work effectively in various classroom settings, so students can understand the pertinent works, definitions, and types of avant-gardism that inflected his art. The fifteen teacher-scholars whose essays are included in the volume offer approaches that combine a focused individual treatment of Hemingway's writing with clear links to the modernist era and offer meaningful assignments, prompts, and teaching tools. The essays and related appendices balance text, context, and classroom practice while considering a broad and student-based audience. The contributors address a variety of critically significant questions-among them: How can we view and teach Hemingway's work along a spectrum of modernist avant-gardism? How can we teach his stylistic minimalism both on its own and in conjunction with the more expansive styles of Joyce, Faulkner, Woolf, and other modernists? What is postmodernist about an author so often discussed exclusively as a modernist, and how might we teach Hemingway's work vis-à-vis that of contemporary authors? How can teachers bridge twentieth- and twentyfirst- century pedagogies for Hemingway studies and American literary studies in high school, undergraduate, and graduate settings? What role, if any, should new media play in the classroom? Teaching Hemingway and Modernism is an indispensable tool for anyone teaching Hemingway, and it offers exciting and innovative approaches to understanding one of the most iconic authors of the modernist era. Teachers in Anglophone Africa : Issues in Teacher Supply, Training, and Management By Aidan Mulkeen 2009 | 230 Pages | ISBN: 0821380532 | EPUB | 1 MB Teachers present a complex of issues for policy makers, which are not always adequately captured by current indicators and addressed by current policies. This work, based on country-specific studies of a broad spectrum of teacher issues in 8 countries in Anglophone Africa, examines specifically teacher supply, deployment, management and finance issues. It reveals that most countries face challenges of teacher supply, and that the planning for and regulation of teacher supply are weak. There are often particular shortages in specific subject areas, most commonly in mathematics and the sciences. In some cases the limiting factor is the output of suitably qualified school leavers. For most countries there are severe problems of teacher deployment, resulting in inefficient utilization of the available teachers. Weaknesses in teacher management and support systems further reduce the effectiveness of teachers. The book suggests that the issues of supply, deployment, quality and cost are inter-related, and should be addressed through a comprehensive series of policies. Based on the case studies, policies which appear to be working, or to offer potential solutions, are identified. Teacher Education Partnerships : Policy and Practice By Trevor Mutton; Katharine Burn; Hazel Hagger; Kate Thirlwall; Ian Menter 2018 | 80 Pages | ISBN: 1912096579 | EPUB | 1 MB This book supports all those involved in initial teacher education (ITE) and with an interest in partnership working. Such partnerships are at the heart of ITE practices, both in the UK and internationally, but more recently models of partnership have become ever more complex as a result of government reforms, the rapid diversification of routes into teaching and significant increase in the number of SCITTs. The nature of partnerships in ITE remains contested with partnership working often reduced to a series of prescriptions for effective practice, ignoring both its pedagogic potential and inherent tensions. This book surveys and critiques partnership developments in recent years and then analyses a single case study of a school that exemplifies the current complexity of ITE partnerships using both policy and practice perspectives. It concludes with a series of principles that might underpin effective partnership working. Taste of Control: Food and the Filipino Colonial Mentality under American Rule by René Alexander D. Orquiza Jr. English | July 17, 2020 | ISBN: 1978806418 | 224 pages | MOBI | 5.47 Mb Winner of the 2021 Gourmand Awards, Asian Section & Culinary History Section Filipino cuisine is a delicious fusion of foreign influences, adopted and transformed into its own unique flavor. But to the Americans who came to colonize the islands in the 1890s, it was considered inferior and lacking in nutrition. Changing the food of the Philippines was part of a war on culture led by Americans as they attempted to shape the islands into a reflection of their home country. Taste of Control tells what happened when American colonizers began to influence what Filipinos ate, how they cooked, and how they perceived their national cuisine. Food historian René Alexander D. Orquiza, Jr. turns to a variety of rare archival sources to track these changing attitudes, including the letters written by American soldiers, the cosmopolitan menus prepared by Manila restaurants, and the textbooks used in local home economics classes. He also uncovers pockets of resistance to the colonial project, as Filipino cookbooks provided a defense of the nation's traditional cuisine and culture. Through the topic of food, Taste of Control explores how, despite lasting less than fifty years, the American colonial occupation of the Philippines left psychological scars that have not yet completely healed, leading many Filipinos to believe that their traditional cooking practices, crops, and tastes were inferior. We are what we eat, and this book reveals how food culture served as a battleground over Filipino identity. Tartessos and Other Cities By Claire Millikin; Fred Marchant 2016 | 127 Pages | ISBN: 1940939429 | EPUB | 1 MB TARTESSOS AND OTHER CITIES is Claire Millikin's second book of poetry with 2Leaf Press that continues to explore homelessness. In this collection, Millikin uses the sensitivity of poetry to express some of the emotions surrounded by homelessness and loss. Named for Tartessos, a lost city on the Guadalquivir, a river in Andalusia, Spain that was likely buried by a devastating tidal wave in BC, the poems in TARTESSSOS gather lost cities and places that were not myths, but were once real. Throughout the collection, Millikin addresses questions such as, What happened to home and Where do I come from? that examines American geographies of loss, with the poems serving as archeological elements that persist against these losses. From New York City to Muscogee Country, Georgia, from New Haven, to the Haw River, TARTESSOS charts a map of disappearances and resistances to vanishing that make up part of the ghostly American landscape. In the end, Millikin leads readers to discover that home is not just the place where you happen to live, it is the place where you become yourself. Taming an Uncertain Future : Temporality, Sovereignty, and the Politics of Anticipatory Governance By Liam P. D. Stockdale 2015 | 199 Pages | ISBN: 1783485000 | EPUB | 1 MB A popular cliché in contemporary public discourse holds that we live in a time of increasing uncertainty; that the next catastrophe is perpetually imminent and yet increasingly beyond our capacity to foresee. The future, in short, is becoming much more difficult to control. One consequence of this increasingly widespread understanding of the future is that societies have turned to anticipatory governance strategies based on such concepts as risk management, the precautionary principle, and pre-emption to manage human affairs. This book takes an in-depth look at this trend by using the example of the 'pre-emptive security' strategies deployed in the post-9/11 War on Terror to develop a critical understanding of how the proliferation of such anticipatory governance strategies affects the way political power is organized and exercised. The book also makes a wider case for taking issues of time and the future more seriously in the study of contemporary global politics in particular and the social world more generally.
