  1. Rodica Amel, "Doxastic Dialectics" English | ISBN: 1527533751 | | pages | PDF | 2 MB This volume is a study addressed to professors and students interested in the philosophy of language. It is generally accepted, though in not sufficiently rigorous terms, that doxastic dialectics can be defined as being an exchange of opinions. Given the subjective rationality of doxa, the traditional doctrine uncovers philosophical limitations in this regard. Instead of minimizing the heuristic power of doxastic dialectics, this book looks at whether it might be possible to affirm doxa's cognitive autonomy regarding episteme, focusing on the mechanism of decidability in doxastic thinking. The text advances three cognitive theses: that doxastic dialectics engenders cognitive intervals between belief, opinion and doxa; that doxastic dialectics opens conditions for an alternative truth, semantically constituted, not analytically proved; and that doxastic dialectics is the exclusive procedure by means of which the fundaments of axiology can be established. 7. David Faris, "Dissent and Revolution in a Digital Age: Social Media, Blogging and Activism in Egypt " English | ISBN: 1780761503 | 2013 | 288 pages | PDF | 5 MB During the Arab uprisings of early 2011, which saw the overthrow of Zine el-Abadine Ben Ali in Tunisia and Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, the role of digital media and social networking tools was widely reported. This was also recognized by the very authorities fighting against popular pressure for change, and the Egyptian government's attempt to block internet and mobile phone access in January 2011 demonstrated the extent to which it was seen as powerful and potentially subversive tool. What is yet to be examined is the local context that allowed digital media to play this role: Egypt, for example, a history of online activism laid important ground work for the scenes in Tahrir Square. Here, David Faris argues that it was circumstances particular to Egypt, more than the 'spark' from Tunisia, that allowed the revolution to take off: namely blogging and digital activism stretching back into the 1990s, combined with sustained and numerous protest movements and an independent press. Dissent and Revolution in a Digital Age tracks the rocky path taken by Egyptian bloggers operating in Mubarak's authoritarian regime to illustrate how the state monopoly on information was eroded, making space for dissent and digital activism. 9. Eileen O'Neill, "Disappearing Ink: Essays in Early Modern Philosophy" English | ISBN: 0190086637 | 2025 | 376 pages | PDF | 6 MB When Eileen O'Neill (1953-2017) published her ground-breaking essay, "Disappearing Ink: Early Modern Women Philosophers and the History of Philosophy" in 1998, women philosophers were virtually absent from encyclopedias of philosophy and the numerous histories and anthologies of early modern thought. This essay would come to have an enormous impact, signaling the beginning of the movement to introduce early modern women philosophers into the canon. In its densely-packed 46 pages, "Disappearing Ink" presented the names, major works, and principal theses of literally dozens of forgotten women, whose works were published during the early modern period and who had engaged in correspondence with central male figures but whose names and works had since been erased. 10. Digital Future in the Rearview Mirror: Jaspers' Axial Age and Logan's Alphabet Effect by Andrey Mir English | December 5, 2023 | ISBN: 1777358914, 9781777358921 | EPUB | 330 pages | 7.5 MB "A major theme of Digital Future in the Rearview Mirror is that the internet has pushed us to 'digital orality,' that is to say, to the forms of communication prevalent before the invention of writing. This brings in a long train of consequences, not least concerning the nature of truth." - Martin Gurri, author of "The Revolt of the Public" "Andrey Mir's Digital Future in the Rearview Mirror describes the rise and fall of literate culture. Mir has sold me on the idea that what I think of as rational, scientific thinking comes from the way that our minds are shaped by reading. But as the written word gives way to electronic media, we are going to retreat from logic, objectivity, and the pursuit of truth." - Arnold Kling, economist, author of "The Three Languages of Politics" "An essential guide for understanding, getting on top of, and even improving the increasingly chaotic and dangerous world we all inhabit. Deeply researched, astutely reasoned, stylishly written, Mir's latest book will become a classic in the study of media and their unpredictable effects." - Paul Levinson, author of "Digital McLuhan" This book explains digital tribalization. Digital media have reversed print literacy and retrieved orality in a new form - in the form of digital orality.Digital orality tests our tolerance by bringing other people much closer and even more intrusively than oral communication did - right onto our most intimate space, our screens.Digital orality rewinds the historical Axial Age. According to Karl Jaspers (1949), the Axial Age (the 8th-3rd centuries BCE), was a period of human "awakening." Humans became aware of their own existence, giving rise to historical consciousness. Fundamental philosophical and religious doctrines emerged in several ancient cultures. At the time, there were no optics available to Jaspers to explain those pivotal changes. Meanwhile, in terms of media ecology, the Axial Age paralleled the spread of literacy. Writing allowed the "separation of the knower from the known" (Havelock) and the "inward turn" (Ong). Additionally, the "alphabet effect" (Logan) contributed to the emergence of monotheism, codified law, individualism, deductive logic, and abstract science. All these developments, enabled by literacy, occurred during Jaspers' Axial Age.2.5 millennia ago, the transition from orality to literacy marked the shift from myth to logos, from magic to faith, from polytheism to monotheism, from customs to laws, from moral relativism to moral absolute, from practical and negotiated truths to objective and absolute truth, from environmental and collective immersion to abstract thinking and individual detachment, from the "circle of life" to personal destiny, from the agitation of tribal belonging to the individual tragedy of (not-)becoming.Now, by reversing literacy and retrieving orality, digital media are replaying these processes backward. Media evolution thrusts us into a struggle between print literacy and digital orality. Digital Future in the Rearview Mirror by Andrey Mir explores the digital future as the historical reversal of literacy through the lens of media determinism. The effects of orality and literacy are catalogued to observe which of them are reversed and retrieved in digital society. As soon as you accept this optic and see these effects, your life will become a captivating ethnographic expedition. Devouring Tomorrow explores this strange new menu through the eyes and palates of some of Canada's most exciting authors. See a world with no bees left to pollinate our crops. Encounter lab-grown meat so advanced that it becomes sentient. Visit a land where diseases wipe out a common fruit and the society of a nation changes around its loss. Whatever their nature or context, they do not conform to normality. Deviant landscapes can be encountered on the face of the earth, on computer screens, in people's minds. This anthology presents varying perspectives on deviant landscapes, widening the theoretical framework of spatial-and-landscape research by delving into the hitherto almost uncharted realm of deviant landscapes in a way that is missing in the academic literature. It exposes a variety of perspectives on deviant landscapes, from disparate scientific domains (i.e. geography, literary studies, sociology, game studies, cultural studies) and delivers useful insights into the diverse theoretical approaches that can be adopted to examine such landscapes (neopragmatist, social constructivist, scientometric, art theoretical etc.). 16. Sophie Hohmann, "Development in Central Asia and the Caucasus: Migration, Democratisation and Inequality in the Post-Soviet Era " English | ISBN: 1780765797 | 2014 | 416 pages | PDF | 14 MB After the final collapse of the Soviet Union, the so-called 'last empire', in 1991, the countries of Central Asia - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan - and of the Caucasus - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia - became independent nations. These countries, previously production centres under the socialist planning system of the Soviet Union, have made enormous economic adjustments in order to develop - or attempt to develop - along capitalist lines. As this study will show, however, inequality in Central Asia and the Caucasus is widening, as the Soviet systems of healthcare and state provisions disappear. Rejecting the Cold War-era East/West paradigm often used to analyse the development of these nations, this study analyses development along the North-South lines which characterise the migration patterns and poverty levels of much of the rest of the developed world. This opens up new avenues of research, and helps us understand why it is, for instance, that this region is better characterised as a 'new South' - as skilled workers flood out of the territories and into Russia and Western Europe. Development in Central Asia and the Caucasus draws together detailed analyses of the development of migration economics as the region's oil wealth further enhances its strategic and economic importance to Russia, the US, the Middle East and to the EU. Esperanza, Gerardo Iván Morales English | May 13, 2025 | ISBN: 1668033771 | True EPUB | 256 pages | 9.4 MB The first-ever memoir of a child's experience in detention on the US/Mexico border under President Trump's infamous family separation policy. D Esperanza was just thirteen years old when he lost his caregivers, his beloved grandmother and uncle. Since both of his parents were working and living in the United States, D was left on his own in a small town in Honduras. He quickly realized he simply could not make enough money to survive so he made the difficult decision to head north with his cousins and hopefully reunite with his parents in el norte. Together, the boys struggled to survive a long and treacherous journey through Central America and Mexico. Along the way, D and his cousins formed a deep bond, only for the four to be brutally separated at the border of the United States. When he is captured and processed at a facility, neither D nor his family are given an update on when he will be released or where he'll go next. Over the next five months, he kept a journal of his experience. The pages tell a story of pain, cruelty, friendship, and resilience, a living testament to the reality of the border. Amidst the senseless inhumanity and violence of US immigration policy, D found hope in the friendship he and his fellow companions forged, and mentorship from one intrepid advocate who fought on his behalf named Gerardo Iván Morales. Timely, powerful, and unforgettable, Detained brings the border crisis to vivid life. Desire Paths by Megan Clement English | 29 April 2025 | ISBN: 1761153358, 9781761153365 | True EPUB | 320 pages | 2.2 MB A story about family, connection and the distance we will go to be with the ones we love. In 2020, as the world is closing its borders, journalist Megan Clement races to be with her father, who is dying on the other side of the world. This is a story about who gets to cross borders, and what Australia's obsession with its own frontiers means for those on either side. It is a story of a woman trying to shrink the planet through force of will to bring herself closer to the father she loves, as the world begins to grapple with its greatest health crisis in a century. It is about the paths we create from our own desires, not the ones that have been laid out for us. 21. Crilly Nathan, "Design Thinking and Other Approaches " English | ISBN: 1009498665 | 2024 | 100 pages | PDF | 5 MB Efforts to promote creativity often centre on encouraging people to engage in 'design thinking', 'systems thinking' and 'entrepreneurial thinking'. These different approaches are most often defined, taught and applied in mutual isolation, which has obscured what distinguishes them from each other, what they have in common and how they might be combined. These three approaches are also most often described in isolation from the approaches that characterize other disciplines, all of which are relevant to how problems are identified, framed and solved. These other approaches include 'computational thinking', 'engineering thinking', 'scientific thinking', 'evolutionary thinking', 'mathematical thinking', 'statistical thinking', 'geographical thinking', 'historical thinking', 'anthropological thinking' and many more. Examining these approaches as a set allows each of them to be better understood, and also reveals the connections and contrasts between them. Such comparisons provide the foundation for a more coordinated project to represent how different disciplinary approaches contribute to creative work. 22. Michael Dillon, "Deng Xiaoping: A Political Biography" English | ISBN: 1780768958 | 2014 | 336 pages | PDF | 3 MB One of the most important figures in global politics during the second half of the 20th century; Deng Xiaoping is generally considered the central figure behind China's economic liberalization programme that produced historically unprecedented growth rates and development beginning in the late 1970s. Lifting nearly a billion people out of poverty, Deng Xiaoping's 'Four Modernisations' called for reform in agriculture, industry, military, and science and technology. Today these reforms are considered to be the crucial turning point in modern Chinese history, enabling China to effectively harness its previously-latent power in its quest to become a global economic superpower. Just ten years after this tremendous achievement, Deng's brutal suppression of the democracy movement at Tiananmen Square severely undermined his international and domestic reputation. To explain the seeming contradictions between Deng Xiaoping's desire for economic liberalization and political conservatism, Michael Dillon's biography utilizes recently-released Chinese sources to detail Deng Xiaoping's emergence from a minority, second-class community in the Sichuan province, via education in France, to his meteoric rise to the top of the CCP's political hierarchy, illustrating the ways in which his life of struggle and survival shaped his political career. Dillon's biography addresses Xiaoping as both an intensely committed communist capable of playing a principal role in the Great Leap Forward from 1958 to 1961, while incurring the wrath of Mao only ten years later as he was exiled and purged during the Cultural Revolution. Emphasizing Deng Xiaoping's effectiveness as a party operator and political bruiser rather than an intellectual capable of formulating the reforms for which he eventually took credit, this book sheds light on Deng's ability to capitalize upon the planning expertise of other party members. This biography of the central figure in China's economic liberalization is essential for any reader interested in or affected by China's rise to global prominence. In this inspiring tale of survival and self-discovery, the reader will follow Maiwand's journey down a dark path and his ultimate redemption. He escaped to a refugee camp in Pakistan, where religious militants began the gradual grooming of Maiwand and other Afghan boys. These confused and traumatised children were indoctrinated, radicalised and prepared to die in the name of a religious war. But Maiwand escaped this life. Fleeing Afghanistan, he had a life-altering crisis of faith, confidence and meaning, finding new purpose and rebuilding himself. Maiwand taught himself how to read and write in English, and here tells his astonishing story in crystalline prose. 24. Margaret MacNamidhe, "Delacroix and His Forgotten World: The Origins of Romantic Painting" English | ISBN: 1780769377 | 2015 | 256 pages | PDF | 120 MB The image of Eugène Delacroix as an august artist with an august oeuvre was initially frozen into place by posthumous tributes and it has continued to the present. He was one of the finest yet least understood painters of the nineteenth century, the golden age of the French Romantic movement. He is remembered best for his masterpiece, La Liberté guidant le people, but few of his works have received the kind of constant, fascinated revisiting that has sealed the iconic status of Théodore Géricault's Le Radeau de la Méduse, for example. This book is one of the first to look carefully at individual paintings by Delacroix, especially at one of his most important works - a key but often overlooked painting from early Romanticism's heyday, Scène des massacres de Scio. The Scio ostensibly depicts an episodic aftermath of violent events from the Greek War of Independence (1821-1832) but its slumped figures and subdued atmosphere do nothing to earn this description. Its defining characteristic-figures that appear simultaneously overwrought and utterly listless-remains unexplained by the attention to political contexts, gender roles, or other concerns that have articulated the reception of Delacroix. Margaret MacNamidhe brilliantly argues that the Scio represents an effort to furnish new models in a tradition that had become increasingly problematic. The painting's mass of bodies arguably defines Delacroix's contribution to French painting: his ebbing interest in depicting a purposeful, singular subjectivity, his increasing concentration on groups simultaneously trapped by and released from the most anguished of circumstances. As well as offering a close reading of his paintings, The Origins of Romantic Paintin g also captures a history of the competing, sometimes baffled versions of Delacroix, from his champion Charles Baudelaire, to painters such as Édouard Manet's close contemporary, Henri Fantin-Latour; the neo-impressionist Paul Signac, and on to the twentieth-century art criticism of Clement Greenberg. In this study, MacNamidhe singlehandedly revives Stendhal's long-neglected writings on painting as well as theatre. Thus his captivating, exasperated tone is heard at last, via descriptions of paintings not only by Delacroix but also by Delacroix's now overlooked peers. MacNamidhe thus combines art theory, theatre and philosophy to help illuminate Delacroix's great project and to rethink Delacroix's reputation as a Romantic, along with his position in French painting as a whole. What if the characteristics of the Scio turned out to be the rule, not the exception? What if our understanding of the 1820s has been confined to a repetitive tradition of interpretations? Drawing together art criticism, art theory, philosophy, literary criticism and theatre, MacNamidhe demonstrates that Delacroix was a more complicated and rewarding painter than he has been taken to be. What emerges from this fascinating, original study is a wholly new way of thinking about French painting in the 1820s and beyond. MacNamidhe compels a rethinking not only of Delacroix's place in art history, but also of Romanticism's place in the tradition of French painting. 25. Adam Lenton, "Decolonizing Russia?: Disentangling Debates " English | ISBN: 1009664786 | 2025 | 75 pages | PDF | 2 MB Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 radically changed the way many viewed the nature of the Russian state. The centrality of resentment and imperial nostalgia in Russian narratives led many to argue that Russian imperialism was a key force behind the invasion. By extension, this led to the idea that decolonization - largely in scholarship, but also among some policy circles - offered a way to better understanding Russia in this new context. To this end, this Element examines the debates over decolonization in the Russian case. It begins by contextualizing these debates through an examination of Russia's historical development as an empire. It then identifies and disentangles three key focal points: decolonization as domestic Russian politics, the transnational politics of decolonization, and decolonization as a scholarly endeavor. By doing so, this Element shows where decolonization has merit, but also where it is contested or limited.
