Organizing Disaster : The Construction of Humanitarianism By Adam Rostis; Albert J. Mills 2016 | 167 Pages | ISBN: 1785606859 | EPUB | 1 MB This book challenges the taken-for-granted status of organizations such as the Red Cross and Medecins Sans Frontieres by problematizing humanitarianism. In the experience of the Author working with such organizations, they are selective of the type of suffering that receives attention. Empirical studies of humanitarianism note that the suffering it purports to alleviate is increasing although aid is now highly organized, funded, and globalized. These observations inform the key question of the book: what purpose does the humanitarian organization serve? Rostis explores this question through a Foucauldian genealogy of humanitarianism focusing on the European colonial era and the Biafra War. The role of colonialism in the humanitarian organization is made apparent, and facilitates an interpretation of the results of his inquiry using postcolonial theory. This unique contribution to organization studies re-reads humanitarianism to show that humanitarian organizations essentially serve as global disciplinary institutions. It will be essential reading for scholars in political science, international sociology, organization studies and international affairs. Operational Safety for Aviation Managers (Managing Aviation Operations) by John Frearson English | November 28, 2024 | ISBN: 0367476452 | 128 pages | MOBI | 0.86 Mb Despite the vast amount of work building the foundations of safe operations, aviation accidents still happen, and prior to many accidents and other safety-related events, there was unexpressed or ignored disquiet as the 'last minute' approached - the last minute being that time when there is no longer time for discussion or analysis, only 'safety first' action. This book aims at the assurance of better outcomes from these time-critical situations whose genesis lies in the time period immediately preceding the 'last minute.' This assurance of better outcomes can best be assured by enabling operational managers to adopt new paradigms, in the development of SOPs, building the right culture, and implementation of training programs relevant to good decision-making required as the 'last minute' approaches. This book examines the development of the foundations for aviation safety - the things that give foundational support for safety to pilots in particular, but over which line pilots may have little knowledge or day-to-day control. It provides a history of time-critical safety-related events, providing the foundation for the understanding of the reasons why pilot inactivity, indifference, fixation, and incapacitation can so pervade the lead up to the 'last minute' as to leave the safe continuation of the flight resting on prompt remedial action. The role of doubt, how it is expressed and how it is heard, is another central thread. Finally, the book addresses the role of flight data analysis as a valuable management tool. Written for aviation managers, line flight crews, and those in similar operational roles in aviation-related operations, this book and its informal discussion style should appeal and communicate across national, age, experience, and language boundaries to create a safer operational environment. Ontic Ethics : Exploring the Influence of Caring on Being By Hollis G. Wright 2016 | 294 Pages | ISBN: 1498520103 | EPUB | 1 MB This book claims that any one who cares more and better, exists more and better. Much has been written about how character affects action, but this book describes how actions and passions affect character ontologically. There is an independent, not culturally relative source for the ethics of care in an ontology of the self. Ethical and aesthetic flourishing is at once ontological flourishing of the largest, truest self. The book includes many illustrations of how behavior and attitudes have consequences not only for who, but for how much we are. It refines the concept of flourishing originating with Aristotle, showing how values that encourage flourishing of the world as it relates to any person, reflexively enhance the flourishing of that person, hence offering a bridge across the fact/value chasm and a cure for ethical relativism. Classical and modern philosophers writing about the nature of a self are engaged to provide a platform from which further advances can be made on several problems in general philosophy that relate to the ontology of a self. These include the use of the term "existence," a bundle theory showing a way substance can be made up of attributes, an exploration of unity in a self, an evaluation of necessary constituents of selfhood, a theory of how persons are constituted in space and time, a portrayal of how existential intensity relates to the exercise of power, and a proposal about how free acts and stances can be connected to character. Applications of an ontology of care to problems of partiality, specialization, limitation, age and death are outlined in the final chapters. All these issues are engaged to explicate the connection between ontological and ethical flourishing of the self/world combination. One Word but Many Tongues : Confessions of a Multiculturalist By Matthew J. Motyka 2016 | 131 Pages | ISBN: 0761868461 | EPUB | 1 MB This book recounts the author's spiritual transformation resulting from his encounter with new languages and cultures. This encounter allowed the author to transcend the boundaries imposed on him by the circumstances of his birth (born and raised behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War). The fresh outlook on the world that emerged for him is the kind of radical shift that lies at the heart of all intense spiritual experiences, regardless of faith affiliation. His journey moves beyond the self to explore the domain of otherness in language, literature, and the arts. Ultimately, the author arrives at a spiritual place in which disparate, culture-bound realms blend--an expanse of acceptance, harmony, and peace. One Size Does Not Fit All : Acknowledging and Addressing What's Wrong with American Public Education By Indrek S. Wichman 2017 | 146 Pages | ISBN: 1475835337 | EPUB | 1 MB Academic success requires talent (ability), which is not equally distributed among students. Almost all American undergraduates hail from K-12 public schools, based on the theory that everyone is academically educable. This has led to the one-size-fits-all system, which has underserved the less academically inclined students, a majority of the K-12 population. The theory that every student is academically educable, an unverified axiom of the current K-12 educational paradigm, has not been subjected to serious scrutiny. Consequently, little progress has been made toward curricular revision except tweaks of the existing system, currently the world's most expensive. However testing, classroom performance, teacher assessment, advances in human biology and, most importantly, family and community experience, suggest that it is possible to determine who is suited for an academic or a technical education. Once that hurdle is crossed, the question of how to best educate/train/prepare America's non-academic youth can be thoughtfully, practically and compassionately addressed. On the Seven Deadly Sins by Kenneth Baker English | September 15, 2018 | ISBN: 1911604139 | 304 pages | MOBI | 23 Mb The Seven Deadly Sins-Pride, Anger, Sloth, Envy, Avarice, Gluttony, and Lust-have shaped history from Greek and Roman times until today. In this highly illustrated book, Kenneth Baker offers readers a tour of the sins, their history, and their resonance in the present. From the medieval era, when sinners wholly believed Hell awaited them, to the present, when punishment for our transgressions comes (if it does) in this world rather than the next, Baker shows that the concept of these faults has always been potent. Addressing Pride, he shows its good side-movements like Black Pride and Gay Pride-but also the way its darker aspects lead to war and devastation. Anger, when righteous, can be a virtue, but how much more often is it a destructive failing? Envy and Avarice are at the heart of capitalism, for good and bad, but they also gnaw at us in secret and can together give rise to economic depredations and financial chicanery. Gluttony, meanwhile, has little to say in its defense, as we know more all the time about its cost to health. And then there's Lust, whose immediate gratification can bring so much pleasure-and so much pain. Charming, insightful, and learned, On the Seven Deadly Sins is the perfect book with which to while away an evening-and wonder about your neighbors. On the Ragged Edge of Medicine : Doctoring among the Dispossessed By Patricia Kullberg 2017 | 173 Pages | ISBN: 0870718851 | EPUB | 1 MB On the Ragged Edge of Medicine offers a glimpse into a medical practice for the homeless and urban poor. Told through fifteen patient vignettes, and drawn from the author's decades of experience in Portland, Oregon, this revealing memoir illuminates the impact of poverty on the delivery of health services and the ways in which people adapt and survive (or don't survive) in conditions of abuse and deprivation. Kullberg's stories show the direct and sometimes devastating effects of poverty on public health, poignantly demonstrating that medicine is as much a social enterprise as a scientific one. On the Outskirts By John Kinsella 2017 | 136 Pages | ISBN: 0702260614 | PDF | 1 MB A stunning new collection by one of Australia's most celebrated poets. Inspired by the natural world, Kinsella's poems consider the protection and valuing of human and animal life, and the environment itself. Reflecting the constant flux of the global and the local, these poems consider the plight of refugees, the degradation of the environment, militarisation and violence. Contemplating the failure of public memory to memorialise, Kinsella reflects on the unresolved issues of history such as Nazism and colonisation. Influenced by William Blake's poetry and art, in particular his uncompleted series of illustrations to Dante's Divine Comedy, Kinsella evokes a strong relationship between the visual and textual. On the Outskirts is a work of strangeness and alienation, and one in which a light of redemption is sought - a rehabilitation in the human character and the healing power of nature. On the Clean Road Again : Biodiesel and the Future of the Family Farm By Willie Nelson; Willie Nelson 2007 | 44 Pages | ISBN: 1555916244 | EPUB | 1 MB For more than 40 years, Willie Nelson has been a national treasure, contributing many memorable songs to our musical canon. His impact, however, extends far beyond the scope of his music. A champion of family farms, Nelson has helped mobilize support for the American farmer, both as a founder of Farm Aid and more recently as one of the nation's most knowledgeable and recognized advocates of the use of biodiesel-a clean-burning, renewable fuel made from vegetable oils or animal fats. In this funny and inspirational book, Nelson confronts our dependency on foreign oil as a source of energy. Through facts, stories, and interviews with everyday Americans, he explains the benefits of biodiesel as an alternative fuel that not only drastically reduces carbon dioxide emissions, but also may help save our family farms. On Rules By Gherardo Colombo; René Foqué; Elisabetta Zoni 2015 | 147 Pages | ISBN: 9462981949 | PDF | 1 MB Justice is simultaneously a practical and an ideal concept: when we think of justice, we refer to its day-to-day administration, involving police, lawyers, judges, and politicians--but we also refer to a larger ideal, a set of basic values that guide our attempts to live together and balance competing interests, obligations, and freedoms. If we lose sight of the practical, the ideal will fail--but if we forget the ideal, the practical becomes pointless. On Rules is the culmination of decades of thinking about and working within the law as both an ideal and a realm of practical action. Gherardo Colombo brings to his rich philosophical analysis of the culture of justice thirty years of experience in the Italian judiciary, which saw him head up numerous important and sensitive commissions and inquiries. His exploration of the concept and application of rules of justice is powerful and clear: if we don't root our experience in a fundamental respect for rules, we cannot have a functioning, just society. On Christian Priesthood By Robin Ward; Ward 2011 | 168 Pages | ISBN: 0826499082 | EPUB | 1 MB The ideas which have defined and informed Christian priesthood in the past are now called into question more than at any time since the Reformation. Is there such a thing as a Christian cult? Is Christian worship in any other way sacrificial? How can ordained Christians be seen as part of a ministerial priesthood distinct from other believers? What does it mean to teach with authority within and on behalf of the Church? When Michael Ramsey wrote The Christian Priest Today he could assume that the priest would be seen as a man of the Eucharist, a confessor, an intercessor and an exponent of the Church's teaching. In the contemporary Church none of these things can be taken for granted in the same say. This book seeks to re-pristinate the doctrine of ministerial priesthood by setting it within the context of fundamental moral theology - to recall readers from all Christian traditions to the fundamental soundness of the concept of ministerial priesthood and its importance in contemporary ecumenical duologue, liturgical reform and pastoral planning. On Being Someone : A Christian Point of View By Helen Oppenheimer 2011 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 1845402286 | PDF | 1 MB This book continues the discussions in "What a piece of work: on being human" (Imprint Academic 2006) and may be considered its sequel. Among all the creatures in the physical universe, humans seem to be more than simply physical, because they are aware of being creatures in the universe. Human beings essentially belong to the world of nature, yet stand out as the most complex and fascinating of all living beings. Like and also unlike other animals, they respond to what happens to them; they make plans and carry them out; they recognize one another, sometimes lovingly; they make friends and enjoy their company; they shape the world around them for convenience and for delight; they ask questions both practical and theoretical; and many of them try to praise God. In What a Piece of Work, Helen Oppenheimer considered humankind as part of the natural universe which Christians believe God set in motion, asking how human beings stand among other creatures and how they are to be valued. In this volume she leaves aside comparisons with our fellow creatures in order to attend to our own experience. It makes a good start to think of oneself as a human animal, but then we need to go further and ask what does it mean to be a person, to be counted as someone? Oligarchs and Oligopolies : New Formations of Global Power By Bruce Kapferer 2005 | 122 Pages | ISBN: 1845451740 | PDF | 1 MB As corporate practices are becoming more fused with state processes, the state itself is increasingly taking on a corporate structure, as well as a more overt oligarchic character. Evidence of this can be seen in the growing domination of political organizations and institutions by close-knit social groups (familial dynasties, closed associations, or personal networks) that seek exclusive control over economic resources. These new forms of state power that are emerging are not reducible to the past, and the nation-state, as the essays in this volume show, is giving way to a political-economic formation that has multiple state-like effects and is able to act in ways systemic with deterritorializing global processes. Exploring these processes in different concrete locations from North America to Russia, West Africa, and Australia, the authors show that current configurations of global, imperial, and state power cannot be understood without examining their relation to formations of oligarchic control. They bring us closer to an understanding of the ways in which the nation-state is being transformed by globalization. Offering Christ : John Wesley's Evangelistic Vision By Jack Jackson 2017 | 177 Pages | ISBN: 1501814222 | EPUB | 1 MB After decades of conversation serving up a mosaic of understandings of Wesleyan evangelism (focusing on proclamation, initiation, and embodiment), Jack Jackson offers a clearer portrait of Wesley's evangelistic vision, understood through the lens of "offering grace." Any discussion of Wesley's vision of evangelism must center on the proclamation of the story of God in Christ. But for John Wesley evangelism was much more than preaching for conversion. This book offers a fresh conception of Wesley's evangelistic vision by analyzing his method of gospel proclamation. Wesley was not constrained by the truncated vision of evangelism that has been dominant since the late nineteenth century, one that all too often centers on group preaching with a sole emphasis on conversion. Rather, he stressed a number of practices that focus on a verbal proclamation of the gospel. These practices occur in a variety of settings, only one of which is public preaching, and result in a number of responses, only one of which is conversion. Of crucial importance for current theological students, clergy, and church leaders around the world, the book demonstrates that visitation, for the purpose of spiritual direction and evangelism, was in many ways the critical leadership and pastoral practice of early British Methodism. This book offers important insights into early Methodism that inform both contemporary practices of evangelism and Christian leadership for both clergy and laity.
