In such a world, any individual with potential and extreme power can unleash disasters or massacres simply for being strong. My client comes from a place where survival is a constant struggle, with a cold climate and predatory beasts. From a young age, she was forged in the art of killing to survive in an environment without family or close friends. Despite that, she had the notion to join and enlist in the Empire. Her life in such an adverse and complex environment led her to desire strength—to be able to defend herself or acquire power through the skills, talents, or experiences from those harsh realities. Upon entering the Empire, she became part of a political regime where she bore enormous responsibilities, facing people with powers that far surpassed those of a common citizen. She also had to lead individuals with such characteristics, displaying effective leadership. Esdeath is loyal to her subordinates above all else—extremely loyal—but she is also a symbol of stability and security in the face of threats to the society she chose to follow. Even beyond that, Esdeath was able to control the mental curse to which she was exposed from a creature of unimaginable power. She is patient, logical, focused on her objectives, and seeks allies from all places—even prison—as long as they are loyal and contribute to her and her mission. She gives herself to them but always understands the difference in power within such relationships, something necessary in hierarchical roles. Nevertheless, she can distinguish between deep love for another person and loyalty to her followers, never placing love above them. She is cunning, intelligent, and straightforward, with a natural and immeasurable talent. She knows how to handle dangerous, vain, or greedy people and understands where power is concentrated—and how powerful she is herself. But this doesn’t lead her to compete with people who think they’re on her level. Still, she’s capable of humbling herself when needed, understanding her role and the structure of government. She creates a relationship between the parts and acts accordingly, since the people around her are not on her level. She has superior reasoning ability and power tied to her being. She knows how dangerous the symbolism of this power is. Yet, despite all that, she cares about the threats that plague the capital or the Empire. Even when understanding the deterioration of the Empire, she has no choice but to safeguard or defend the interests of the people she truly protects. In a reality like this, having a defense or a protective layer such as the titles of sadism or being someone who tortures people or committed massacres—in this extreme fantasy world filled with phenomena often out of control—having a certain fame and reputation of subduing the enemy through fear of her presence becomes valuable for stability. It reduces conflicts and, therefore, human losses in the cities or urban centers. She even thinks economically, by reducing conflict costs. Sacrifices in such a situation, like the one the Empire is experiencing, are necessary—and she carries out that task with absolute professionalism, beyond her imbalances. Still, what many might consider torture or coercion is, for her, more of a seduction game. With her status, her way of being, and the things she’s lived through, the fact that such a character takes things slowly with a potential partner shows a structured and respectful approach toward that person—understanding that they are not just anyone. She maintains a status, a presence, and a respect toward others, yet expressing her love openly to all her subordinates or superiors is something incredible. She is a woman who knows what she wants and has the power to take her time to get it, trying to live life’s experiences to the fullest, even using that in a political and social game with people who don’t interest her. This, at heart, completely throws off her direct rivals, creating total stagnation in the face of any internal threat so she can focus on her real mission: generating stability and recovering a path beyond one consumed by a violent life. She is capable of feeling love, and that is a possibility for change and to develop other structural branches of her daily life. If Tatsumi had had a different experience and had at least understood a bit of the perspective that a character of that level represents—if he had been able to provide Esdeath with other characteristics or experiences—he might have caused a change in her. The guy was an idiot in that regard. She helped him, taught him, sheltered him, and didn’t even kill him knowing the protagonist’s intentions. Honestly, incredible things could have happened if those characters had complemented each other—possibly reducing destructive impacts in cities and sparing civilians' lives. The central problem is corruption and therefore the crimes committed by its variants. But Esdeath, to me, is brilliant—willing to fight for others, to care for her followers, to seek strength every day in a complex and hostile world. She’s capable of loving and therefore giving herself the chance to change like any normal person, understanding her condition. That’s impressive in itself. Being able to control a creature marked as a demon with sheer mental strength—in minutes, not days, months, or years—is incredible. She understands the difference in power and carries the weight of an entire empire. To top it off, she’s loyal to her own. Truly, Tatsumi is an idiot, and certain agreements could have been reached if things had gone differently. That’s why he’s an idiot. He had influence over the most important person in the Empire, really To me, Esdeath is the best and most deeply developed character in every sense—her will, her role, her characterization—despite the sadistic or malevolent things she might have done. These were highly situational in an environment that demanded them, especially because of her position. She carried all of that on her shoulders, and miraculously, all she wanted was love in a world of killing, fighting, perversion, and all kinds of horrors. She imposed order, and that order helped regular people at the end of the day. She reduced external threats or radical groups driven by hate caused by things where she probably wasn’t even involved. Esdeath’s misfortune was being alone—without support on her level or people who could fully understand the situation. Even if she had good comrades, she didn’t have people who were truly capable, loyal, or committed to what she once committed to. That’s harsh considering all the sacrifices she made—so harsh that she never even had the chance to change her life. Yet in the series, she is shown as someone evil. In truth, there were probably hundreds or thousands more evil than her. What she did had deep meaning, and no one understood it. So the people around her weren’t qualified. That’s a tragedy to me, and she didn’t deserve to die, considering her story, her position, and the state of the Empire—which wasn’t even her fault. Plus, she treated her followers well despite her high rank. Like the disciplinary punishment she gave one of her subordinates after he lost his love in battle—she reacted with a disciplinary action, even though she let radical enemies of the Empire escape. That’s no small thing—it shows superior leadership, understanding the value of her people and of future battles. She didn’t deserve to die. And Tatsumi didn’t deserve to be such a trash character like so many others—he wasn’t up to the task. P.S.: In bed, you don’t talk politics—especially not when a woman wants to give herself to you as an act of love. P.S.: In bed, you don’t talk politics—especially not when a woman wants to give herself to you as an act of love. P.S.: "In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." This quote is attributed to George Orwell, who said it while reflecting on the manipulation of language and truth in the 20th century. Esdeath its seem to be a natural genius with Brushstrokes of natural truth in that setting. No merecía morir.
