Identification and growth habits of common trees in Georgia

The course will teach students to identify common trees in native and designed landscapes in Georgia. The primary focus will be on plants in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8a and 8b, although some overlap will occur with surrounding areas. At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to identify 75 trees and have a basic understanding of their characteristics. Course content is primarily video and lecture, so students can learn tree identification even when outdoor study might not be possible. However, maps of trees local to the Columbus, GA area are also included so students can take their studies outdoors. Identifying this many trees may sound a little boring, but the instructor makes it fun and easy by providing little known facts, tips for remembering characteristics, and funny stories along the way. There are nine sections. Depending on the current skill level of the participant, each section could take up to one week to master. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace. If one section is particularly easy, move right on to the next!
