Like his brother Johnny Winter is recognizable by his albinism. After recording with his brother, Johnny Winter, Edgar signed his own recording contract with Epic Records in 1970 and recorded two successful albums, Entrance and Edgar Winter's White Trash.In 1972 he formed The Edgar Winter Group, who accompanied Dan Hartman, Ronnie Montrose and Chuck Ruff and later guitarist and producer Rick Derringer in Montrose. It was with this band that achieved its greatest success They Only Come Out at Night (1972) figuring instruments and hit song "Frankenstein", pioneering the use of the synthesizer as the main instrument subject.
