Narra la historia del fenómeno del surf Jay Moriarity (Jonny Weston). Cuando, a la edad de 15 años, Jay descubre que las míticas olas conocidas como ‘Mavericks’, unas de las más descomunales del planeta, se aproximan a su hogar de Santa Cruz, donde van a romper, busca la ayuda del legendario Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler) para que lo entrene y así poder sobrevivir a dicho fenómeno. Cuando Jay y Frosty se embarcan en el empeño de lograr lo imposible va surgiendo entre ellos una singular amistad que transforma sus vidas; y su intento de dominar a las Mavericks se convierte en algo que rebasa la práctica del surf.
