Obligado a escapar de la policía –controlada por el canciller Cohaagen– Quaid no puede confiar en nadie salvo, posiblemente, en un miembro de los rebeldes que trabaja para el jefe de la resistencia. La línea entre la fantasía y la realidad se desdibuja y el destino de su mundo pende de un hilo cuando Quaid descubre su verdadera identidad, su verdadero amor y su verdadero destino.
