Promise, Texas no es un lugar para tener una familia. No llueve, los negocios están fracasando, y los niños casi no pueden esperar crecer para irse a vivir a otra ciudad. Algunos dicen que el pueblo está maldito. Pero justo cuando las cosas están en su período más oscuro, un misterioso niño aparece de la nada con nada más que las ropas que tiene puestas y algo extraño bajo su brazo.

El niño tiene un mensaje para la gente de Promise, pero ellos no quieren escuchar. Permanecen ciegos ante las similitudes entre el decaimiento del pueblo y el de sus almas. Confrontados ante sus problemas espirituales el pueblo transforma su indignación en ira. Sin embargo el niño se mantiene fiel a su mensaje: no hay esperanza sin Cristo, y el pueblo Promise solo puede salir de su estancamiento y deterioro y comenzar a crecer manteniendo una honesta comunión con el Padre.
