Narra paralelamente la historia de tres personajes que han tenido algún tipo de contacto con la muerte: una periodista francesa (Cécile de France), que estuvo a punto de morir durante el tsunami que asoló el Sudeste asiático en las Navidades de 2004; un niño inglés (George McLaren) que pierde a su hermano gemelo en un terrible accidente, y un norteamericano (Matt Damon) que tiene el don de comunicarse con los muertos.
