En un mundo sin armas de fuego, un misterioso vagabundo (Josh Hartnett) llega a una extraña ciudad en la que sus habitantes viven aterrorizados por el despiadado Nicola (Ron Perlman) y su ejército de matones, encabezados por nueve asesinos mortales entre los que destaca el cruel Asesino nº 2 (Kevin McKidd). El vagabundo se ve forzado a confiar en un joven samurai (la súper estrella japonesa Gackt), que busca restablecer el honor de su familia, y en el dueño del bar de la ciudad (Woody Harrelson) que ha estado esperando reunir a un equipo para acabar con el tiránico régimen de Nicola.
