Tras su huida de los Estados Unidos, el legendario forajido Butch Cassidy y su amigo Sundance Kid murieron en Bolivia en 1908, en un tiroteo. Esto es lo que dice la version oficial. Este filme, en cambio, nos muestra que, despues de vivir escondido durante veinte anos, lo que Cassidy deseaba era volver a su pais. Sin embargo, cuando conoce a un joven ingeniero espanol que acaba de robar una mina que pertenece al empresario mas importante de Bolivia, sus planes se ven alterados.
