En febrero de 2006, Luke Abbate aceptó dar un paseo en coche con un compañero de clase después del entrenamiento del equipo de fútbol del instituto. A pesar de las advertencias de todos los chicos que iban en el coche, el conductor se pasó de velocidad y perdió el control del vehículo, provocando un terrible accidente. Luke sufrió una lesión cerebral irreparable y murió en el hospital dos días más tarde, cuatro días antes de su decimosexto cumpleaños. A partir de entonces, su familia y sus amigos decidieron rendirle homenaje levantando los cinco dedos de una mano a modo de señal en todos los partidos, ya que ése era el número de la camiseta que vestía Luke cuando jugaba.
