El film narra la evolución de Jack, un niño que vive con su madre (Jessica Chastain), que encarna el amor y la bondad, mientras que su padre (Brad Pitt), que representa la severidad, es el encargado de enseñarle a enfrentarse a un mundo hostil. Sean Penn interpreta a Jack en la edad adulta. Por otro lado, se trata también la historia del Universo desde sus orígenes.
