Remake del film danés de Susanne Bier, “Brothers (Brødre)” (2004). El capitán Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), un condecorado marine, es enviado a combatir en Afganistán. Algunos meses después, el gobierno lo declara fallecido o desaparecido. Enterado de la noticia, su hermano pequeño Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) se queda en Estados Unidos, cuidando de su cuñada Grace (Natalie Portman) y sus sobrinos. Con el tiempo, Tommy se gana su cariño y llega a sustituir a su hermano como marido y como padre.
