1820: el joven Don Diego de la Vega, hijo de un caballero criollo, concluye sus estudios universitarios en Europa y regresa a México. Al encontrar a una California tiranizada por la corrupta autoridad española, Don Diego adopta una táctica: ante los ojos de todos, es un cobarde y aburrido intelectual, que rechaza unirse a su padre y otros rancheros en la lucha por la justicia y la libertad... pero, al caer la noche, se enfundará en un oscuro disfraz y, haciendo uso de sus ocultas habilidades de atleta y espadachí*n, librará su propia guerra como un anónimo justiciero y libertador. Sus hazañas pronto se convertirí*an en la esperanza del sometido pueblo californiano y en el terror de los déspotas: montado en su caballo negro, un antifaz ocultando su identidad y la Z dibujada por su justiciera espada; es... ¡EL ZORRO!
