Por lo descabellado de la trama, se podría pensar que se trata de una idea de Mel Brooks, pero en realidad esta película se basa en una historia rusa escrita en los años 20 por dos periodistas soviéticos, Ilya Ilf y Yevgenni Petrov.

Ambientada en Rusia en 1927, esta exitosa comedia clásica de Mel Brooks es una divertidísima película que nos cuenta la historia del que fuera un aristócrata (RON MOODY) y que ahora, bajo el nuevo régimen soviético, no es más que un empleado administrativo ruso. Al descubrir que su moribunda suegra escondió las valiosísimas joyas de la familia en una de las doce sillas de un juego de comedor, se lanza a atravesar Rusia para dar con ellas. En su aventura lo acompañan un oportunista (FRANK LANGELLA), un cura (DOM DeLUISE) y su antiguo criado (MEL BROOKS), todos a la caza de la silla..
