The relationship between the type of light and the number of electrons emitted defied explanation, until Einstein showed that light is "quantized," with light quanta (or photons) of a specific energy required to dislodge individual electrons. Related to Erwin Schrödinger's famous cat paradox about a feline that is simultaneously dead and alive, this principle allows quantum particles to affect each other instantly over huge distances, raising the possibility of uncrackable codes communicated through quantum signals. They have been exploited for practical purposes since at least the 12th century, when the Chinese invented the navigational compass using naturally magnetized iron stones. Yet explaining how magnets work requires surprisingly subtle physics and is rarely presented in popular accounts. The phenomena they describe seem abstract and esoteric, things that only matter if you've got a billion-dollar particle accelerator or are orbiting near a supermassive black hole. The number of electrons (ne ) is equal to the number of holes (nh ) in intrinsic conductors. Holes are essentially electron vacancies with an effective positive charge. 5. The number of charge carriers can be changed by 'doping' of a suitable impurity in pure semiconductors. Such semiconductors are known as extrinsic semiconductors. These are of two types (n-type and p-type). 6. In n-type semiconductors, ne >> nh while in p-type semiconductors nh >> ne . 8. n-type semiconducting Si or Ge is obtained by doping with pentavalent atoms (donors) like As, Sb, P, etc., while p-type Si or Ge can be obtained by doping with trivalent atom (acceptors) like B, Al, In etc. 7. There are two distinct band of energies (called valence band and conduction band) in which the electrons in a material lie. Valence band energies are low as compared to conduction band energies. All energy levels in the valence band are filled while energy levels in the conduction band may be fully empty or partially filled. The electrons in the conduction band are free to move in a solid and are responsible for the conductivity. The extent of conductivity depends upon the energy gap (Eg ) between the top of valence band (EV ) and the bottom of the conduction band EC . The electrons from valence band can be excited by heat, light or electrical energy to the conduction band and thus, produce a change in the current flowing in a semiconductor. 8. For insulators Eg > 3 eV, for semiconductors Eg is 0.2 eV to 3 eV, while for metals Eg ≈ 0. 9. p-n junction is the 'key' to all semiconductor devices. When such a junction is made, a 'depletion layer' is formed consisting of immobile ion-cores devoid of their electrons or holes. This is responsible for a junction potential barrier. 10. By changing the external applied voltage, junction barriers can be changed. In forward bias (n-side is connected to negative terminal of the battery and p-side is connected to the positive), the barrier is decreased while the barrier increases in reverse bias. Hence, forward bias current is more (mA) while it is very small (µA) in a p-n junction diode. 11. Diodes can be used for rectifying an ac voltage (restricting the ac voltage to one direction). With the help of a capacitor or a suitable filter, a dc voltage can be obtained. 15. There are some special purpose diodes. 12. Zener diode is one such special purpose diode. In reverse bias, after a certain voltage, the current suddenly increases (breakdown voltage) in a Zener diode. This property has been used to obtain voltage regulation. 13. p-n junctions have also been used to obtain many photonic or optoelectronic devices where one of the participating entity is 'photon': (a) Photodiodes in which photon excitation results in a change of reverse saturation current which helps us to measure light intensity; (b) Solar cells which convert photon energy into electricity; (c) Light Emitting Diode and Diode Laser in which electron excitation by a bias voltage results in the generation of light. 14. Transistor is an n-p-n or p-n-p junction device. The central block (thin and lightly doped) is called 'Base' while the other electrodes are 'Emitter' and 'Collectors'. The emitter-base junction is forward biased while collector-base junction is reverse biased. 15. Transistor can be used as an amplifier and oscillator. In fact, an oscillator can also be considered as a self-sustained amplifier in which a part of output is fed-back to the input in the same phase (positive feed back). 16. When the transistor is used in the cutoff or saturation state, it acts as a switch. 17. There are some special circuits which handle the digital data consisting of 0 and 1 levels. This forms the subject of Digital Electronics. 18. The important digital circuits performing special logic operations are called logic gates. These are: OR, AND, NOT, NAND, and NOR gates. 19. Partial derivatives may be combined in interesting ways to create more complicated expressions of the derivative. For example, in vector calculus (which we will see), the "del" operator is used to define the concepts of gradient, divergence, and curl in terms of partial derivatives. A matrix of partial derivatives, the Jacobian matrix, may be used to represent the derivative of a function between two spaces of arbitrary dimension. Differential equations containing partial derivatives are called partial differential equations or PDEs. These equations are generally more difficult to solve than ordinary differential equations, which contain derivatives with respect to only one variable (PDEs are not discussed in this course). Multiple integration. The multiple integral extends the concept of the integral to functions of any number of variables. Double and triple integrals may be used to calculate areas and volumes of regions in the plane and in space. The surface integral and the line integral are used to integrate over curved manifolds such as surfaces and curves. We will see these concepts. The second part of this course is about solving advanced mechanics problems; since multivariable calculus is a staple of this second part, I decided to combine the part on physics problems and the one on multivariable calculus into a single course, where you can therefore find lots of material. This set of problems is taken from the first volume of the course of theoretical physics by Landau and Lifshitz. I have selected some problems from this book and provided a thorough step-by-step solution in the course; the solutions to these problems are also given in the book but they are usually quite terse, namely not many details are provided. Therefore, what we will do in the course is to first construct the necessary theory to deal with the problems, and then we will solve the problems. Some theory is also discussed while solving the problems themselves. Every single formula in this course is motivated/derived. We will start from the action principle, whose main constituent is the Lagrangian, which is fundamental to dealing with advanced problems in all branches of physics, even if we restrict ourselves to mechanics in this case. We will solve several problems related to how to construct a Lagrangian of a (possibly complex) system, and we will also derive the Hamiltonian from the Lagrangian, which represents the energy of a system, and do some problems on that. We will also study the kinematics of rigid bodies, and derive formulae for the velocities of points which belong to the bodies, as well as formulae for accelerations. Accelerations are important not just for kinematics, but also for the dynamics of rigid bodies. As regards the motion of rigid bodies, we will discuss the kinetic energy, which is necessary to obtain the Lagrangian, and solve several problems in three dimensions related to how to find the kinetic energy of a body in motion. The expression of the kinetic energy is dependent on the angular velocity (which is a concept that we will derive in kinematics), and also depends on the inertia matrix (or inertia tensor), which we will also derive. The formulae will be therefore written in a very general form, and this is useful when tackling difficult problems, since knowing a general method will provide the means to solve them. The inertia tensor will appear in the expression for the kinetic energy, and it will also appear in dynamics, in the formula for moments; we will see why it appears, and use the theory to solve problems. We will also discuss non-inertial frames, and find the deflection of a freely falling body from the vertical caused by the Earth's rotation (which makes the Earth a non-inertial frame).
