Melvyn Bragg and soul singer James Hunter reflected in an interview enormously influential American blues artist John Lee Hooker for the series of iconic arts in 1993.

John Lee Hooker (22 August 19171 - June 21, 2001), was a singer and guitarist of American blues. Hooker's musical career began in 1948 when he got hit with the single "Boogie Chillen" sung in a medium spoken style that became characteristic. Rhythmically, his music was free, a feature that has been common among the first acoustic Delta blues musicians. His phrasing was not so tied to the standards of most blues singers. This informal and inconsistent style was diluted with the advent of electric blues bands from Chicago but, even when not playing solo, Hooker maintained its own sound. In 1955 he finished his contract with Modern Records and joined the company Vee Jay, of Chicago, who published the classic Dimples and Boom Boom.
